Linkevičius calls on his EU counterparts to more actively support Moldova’s European reforms

On 26 February in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius participated in the EU's Foreign Affairs Council meeting. The Council discussed Moldova, the Middle East peace process, and Venezuela.

Foreign ministers discussed the political and security situation in Moldova, the implementation of the Association Agreement, the country’s reforms, and drew attention to the areas in which the lack of progress was the greatest. In his speech, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister noted that Moldova’s progress in implementing reforms had to be recognised in such areas, as the legal system and the fight against corruption. However, although the necessary institutions have already been set up, they need to be effective. According to foreign ministers, Moldova could only expect the EU's support and assistance, if the country consistently demonstrates its commitment to efforts and results in the implementation of reforms.

Heads of EU diplomacy also discussed the situation in Venezuela, which continued to be challenging. The Council had a discussion on the latest developments ahead of Presidential elections scheduled for 22 April.

As regards the EU’s role in the Middle East peace process, foreign ministers reaffirmed the EU’s common position on a two-state solution.
