Lithuania strengthens its relationship with Peru
On 14 March, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Albinas Zananavičius met with the new Peruvian Ambassador to Lithuania Thierry Roca-Rey Deladrier, who resides in Helsinki. On the same day, the Ambassador presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė.
Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister and the Ambassador discussed the growing bilateral relationship, economic cooperation, and the upcoming Peruvian business mission to Vilnius on 21 May.
“I am pleased that Peruvian companies are taking interest in the Baltic states and will send their representatives to Vilnius with an investigative business mission, which will help to establish direct contacts between Lithuanian and Peruvian entrepreneurs,” said Zananavičius.
According to Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister, bilateral trade increased by 35 percent and reached EUR 5.4 million in 2017. However, there is still a lot of untapped economic potential.
The interlocutors called for a speedy conclusion to an agreement on the transfer of convicts between the two countries. Currently, Peru has the largest number of Lithuanian citizens (24) held in prison facilities in all of Latin America.
The interlocutors were also pleased that the two countries had opened negotiations on the working holiday program that would open up more opportunities for young Lithuanians to travel and work in Peru.
The Ambassador took interest in Lithuania’s experience of accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), because Peru also had plans to seek membership in the OECD.
Thierry Roca-Rey Deladrier is the seventh Ambassador of Peru accredited to Lithuania. Lithuania has not accredited its Ambassador to Peru. Lithuania’s Honorary Consul Eduardo Alberto Paškevičius Velarde is carrying out consular functions in Lima.
Lithuania and Peru established their diplomatic relations on 9 June 1997.
