Lithuanian freedom fighter Juozas Jakavonis-Tigras visited the studio of Voice of America and the White House
During their stay in Washington, D.C., Juozas Jakavonis-Tigras and his daughter Angelė Jakavonytė visited the organisation of Voice of America.
“I was impressed with the sound of the music [of Voice of America] broadcast at the place from where the voice of freedom spread to the whole world,” said Jakavonis after a visit to the radio studio. “Not only me, but the entire Lithuania as well would wait for this voice every day,” the Lithuanian partisan shared his memories.
The Director of the Eurasia Division at Voice of America dr. Elez Biberaj presented a letter of acknowledgement and a listener’s certificate of honour to J. Jakavonis. The legendary fighter for the freedom of Lithuania shared his memories of listening to the voice of freedom from Washington not only in Lithuania but also when living in exile in Siberia.
“This visit of the Lithuanian freedom fighter is the perfect testimony to the fact that a belief in freedom and the power of free speech are the strongest links connecting our countries. It is symbolic that Honourable Juozas Jakavonis is here today because the free press was also published in the bunker in Tigras’s farmstead,” said Kęstutis Vaškelevičius, an adviser to the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington, D. C., who accompanied J. Jakavonis at Voice of America.
On June 14, J. Jakavonis and his daughter also visited the White House. After attending the residence of the President of the United States of America, J. Jakavonis shared his pleasure that the US presidents have repeatedly expressed their readiness to defend Lithuania’s independence, and recently, the US military equipment has been deployed in Lithuania. “We could only fight with rusty cartridges, and now equipment is used. And I used to say that we would be free forever with the help of the Americans,” said J. Jakavonis-Tigras.
The visit of the legendary Lithuanian partisan to the USA is organised by the Lithuanian Honorary Consul in Rochester Rimas Česonis and his daughter Jolanda Česonytė.
On 21-22 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius will be paying a visit to Washington, D.C.
