Lithuania marks 25th anniversary of Restoration of Independence in Luxembourg

On 11 March Lithuania’s 25 years of restored independence was celebrated in Luxembourg. Numerous guests that included Luxembourg officials, public figures, diplomats, representatives of EU institutions in Luxembourg and almost 200 Lithuanian community members gathered in cultural center “Tramsschapp” to commemorate this special occasion.

Lithuanian Ambassador to Luxembourg Gediminas Varvuolis delivered a word of welcome by congratulating everyone and by stressing the outstanding Lithuania’s achievements during the 25 years of freedom. 

The guest of honor, former Prime Minister of Luxembourg and former President of the European Commission, Jacques Santer shared his memories on Lithuania’s fight for freedom and stressed that Lithuania’s resolve was crucial not only for the country itself but also for the unification of all Europe.

The guests enjoyed cultural program comprising music, painting and literary works of one of the greatest Lithuanian artists Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, performed by his great-grandson, pianist Rokas Zubovas and pianist Sonata Zubovienė.

A notable part of event was art exhibition presenting eight prominent Lithuanian painters representing different generations and reflecting the tendencies of modern Lithuanian painting, the exploration of new artistic directions and the relation between the traditional and the modern.

The celebration was organized by the Embassy of Lithuania to Luxembourg in cooperation with Lithuanian community of Luxembourg, Member of the European Court of Auditors Rasa Budbergytė, Judge of European Court of Justice and signatory of the Declaration of the Restoration of Independence Egidijus Jarašiūnas and Lithuanian Honorary Consul in Luxembourg Robert Wagener.
