Belgium recognized Lithuania de jure on 27 December 1922.
On 11 March 1990, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium underlined that legally there was no need to recognize Lithuania for the second time.
On 5 September 1991, diplomatic relations with Belgium were re-established.
From 1991 to 1992,  Chargé d’Affaires Rimantas Morkvėnas served as the first representative of Lithuania to Belgium after the re-establishment of independence.
From 1992 to 1994, Kamiel Criel served as the first representative of Belgium to Lithuania (resided in Sweden).
