Lithuanian Ambassador to Belgium Gediminas Varvuolis visited Ghent University and delivered a lecture to the students on the Lithuania’s role in the United Nations Security Council presidency's and its priorities and achievements there. According to the ambassador, Lithuanian membership in UNSC is a very big achievement for such small countries like Lithuania or Belgium. Lithuanian activity in the Security Council allows Lithuania to contribute to peace and world order, as well as giving to Lithuania an opportunity to be visible with its voice heard on a global scale.
The Ambassador highlighted the priorities of Lithuanian chairmanship of the UN Security Council: of Russian aggression in Ukraine, ensuring respect for the law, relations between the EU and the UN building, and the fight against violence. During the Presidency in May this year Lithuania will continue to work on old and new goals - to ensure the safety of journalists in war zones, by proposing a resolution on small and light weapons, by continuing to be involved in solving the Mediterranean migration and refugee issues.
