SANDGLASSES VISUAL MUSIC PERFORMANCE TO CROWN THE LITHUANIAN PRESIDENCY CULTURAL PROGRAMME IN BRUSSELS

The closing event of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union took place on December 18 at the Flagey Art Centre in Brussels – the Sandglasses audio-visual performance by composer Justė Janulytė. Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė, Minister of Culture Šarūnas Birutis, officials of EU institutions, diplomats and the international community of Brussels participated at the closing event.

Sandglasses is a meditative and inspirational composition exploring the audio, visual, and symbolic meaning of sand timers. From its very opening, this unique project evoked exceptional interest from the international public, and became the first large Lithuanian composition to be included in the network of major European contemporary music festivals - Reseau Varese. The project was produced by Vilniaus Festivaliai.

Sandglasses audio-visual project for four cellos, live electronics and visual and light installations will be performed by the Lithuanian cellists Edmundas Kulikauskas, Povilas Jacunskas, Onutė Švabauskaitė and Rūta Tamutytė. Live electronics are performed by Michele Tadini and Antonello Raggi. The lighting designer is Vilius Vilutis.

The most impressive part of the project, the video projections, was created by the famous Italian artist Luca Scarzella. Images are projected onto four giant cylinders, the sand timers, turning into tulle installations enshrouding the cellists who play accompanied by live electronics.
