State of Emergency

On 26 February 2020, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania decided to declare a state-level emergency in the country, preparing for potential spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The Cabinet set up the center, headed by Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga, and allocated 150,000 euros from its reserve fund to purchase additional protective equipment and cover other unforeseen expenses that health institutions might incur due to the coronavirus threat.

The declaration of a state of emergency in the country is a preventive measure against the spread of the coronavirus. It will help to coordinate the work of the responsible institutions, utilise equipment in state reserves, and streamline other procedures. The above mentioned Center, among other things, will have a right to decide whether to allow civil servants to travel to coronavirus-affected countries or separate regions, and to instruct schools and other institutions to have a sufficient supply of disinfectants.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania currently recommends against travelling to China, some regions of Italy, Spain and South Korea.
